Nikko Toshogu Shrine is one of Japan's most famous shrines and a highlight of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko."
This bracelet is made from cedar originating from the historic Nikko Cedar Avenue, where majestic trees bear the inscription "Nikko Toshogu Shrine" and the three-leaf hollyhock crest associated with the Tokugawa family.
The cedar trees along Nikko Cedar Avenue were planted over a period of approximately 20 years, beginning in 1625, and are now nearly 400 years old.
Nikko Cedar Avenue holds the rare distinction of being designated as both a Special Historic Site and a Special Natural Monument of Japan.
Because of its protected status, the trees cannot be cut down except under special circumstances, such as when they have died.
Nikko Toshogu Shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, who is enshrined as Tosho Daigongen.
Most of the shrine buildings seen today were reconstructed in 1636 under the direction of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa shogun, during a major renovation known as the "Kanei Reconstruction."
The shrine complex features 55 buildings, including 8 National Treasures and 34 Important Cultural Properties, renowned for their magnificent architecture and elaborate decorations.
Located directly north of Edo Castle (now the Imperial Palace), the shrine was strategically positioned to protect the northern direction of the former capital.
Its location is also said to have been carefully selected according to traditional principles of Feng Shui and Onmyodo, a Japanese system of cosmology and divination.
Among its many famous attractions are the Three Wise Monkeys carved on the Sacred Stable, the reversed pillar believed to ward off evil, the magnificent Yomeimon Gate, the Sleeping Cat carving, and the Inner Shrine where Tokugawa Ieyasu rests.
Nikko Cedar is traditionally associated with good fortune, success in business and career, personal advancement, and protection against misfortune.
With its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, this bracelet makes a meaningful personal keepsake or a thoughtful gift for someone special.
