What Is Gold Rutile Cat’s Eye?

Among rutile quartz, stones that contain an especially large amount of fine, needle-like inclusions are known as gold rutile.

The cat’s eye effect—a band of light resembling a cat’s eye—appears when areas where these needle-like inclusions are aligned more parallel are fashioned into a cabochon cut, producing a single, sharp line of reflected light (the chatoyancy effect).
