MTL is an abbreviation for the Median Tectonic Line, which was discovered in 1885 by Edmund Naumann, a German geologist who studied the geology of Japan. History says that the MTL was formed when Japan was still a continent. Due to very strong plate activity, the tectonic line shifted significantly, causing the Japanese archipelago to bend in a U-shape and separate from the continent, completing the current Japanese archipelago. This black schist can be collected anywhere on the MTL, not just in Tokushima, but there are only a limited number of places where the MTL can be observed exposed. Like solomonite, it is a stone that has been subjected to very strong energy and pressure from the earth.
