OHMI TAGA Stone TM

Producing district: Taga-cho, Inukami District, Shiga Prefecture

Meanings: Longevity, matchmaking, protection from evil

 

A type of limestone mined in Taga Town. Although it is limestone, it is strong and has beautiful colors and patterns. It was formed underwater about 280 million years ago. Hikone Castle and Taga Taisha Shrine, which enshrines the deities Izanagi and Izanami, are located nearby. Like Kyoto and Nara, the area is rich in history, cultural assets, and mythology. It is said that Izanagi, the father of Amaterasu Omikami, and his wife Izanami, made their final home in Taga after creating the Japanese archipelago. The history of this place in the Edo period was said that "if you visit Ise Shrine (enshrined deity: Amaterasu Omikami), you must also visit her parent, Izanagi no Miya (Taga Taisha)."
