A Japan stone that also appears in "Kii Zoku Fudoki" (Kii Topography continued). During the Heian period, it was prized as a high-class stone for items such as inkstones. It is a stone from Kumano City, where the World Heritage Site Kumano Kodo is located. It is famous for the more it is polished, the more it acquires an indescribably beautiful, miraculous jet-black luster. The particles are 0.1 microns in size and have a very fine texture, making them attractive to the touch. The symbolic Yatagarasu, a bird with spiritual power that lives in the sun, is revered as the god of guidance and traffic safety.
