Japan Stones: ISAHAYA Stone
Producing district: Nagasaki Prefecture
Meanings: Wisdom, quick decision making, financial luck

This hard sandstone is produced in Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture, where the Sengoku period warlord Ryuzoji, formerly known as the Isahaya clan, was located. Ryuzoji Takanobu was one of the three most powerful Sengoku period warlords in Kyushu, and was known for his quick decision-making ability. In the records of Luis Frois, he described his decisiveness as being “unparalleled even by the speed and wisdom of Caesar.” The name Ryuzoji was changed to Isahaya during the time of Ieharu, one of the four Ryuzoji families. The Isahaya family’s territory was very high, and they were said to have been wealthy. Isahaya stone is one of the Japan stones produced in that territory.
